ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The skeleton of the thoracic limb is one of the key aspects for the understanding of the habits and movement of different mammalian species. Considering the gap about studies related to marsupial osteology, this work proposes to study the aspects inherent to the skeleton of opossums, with emphasis on the detailed anatomical description of the bones that form the thoracic limb. For this purpose, the bones of six specimens of possums of the species Didelphis albiventris were used. These small to medium sized marsupials inhabit a wide range of South America, living in several types of habitats, being commonly described as arboreal omnivores and have anthropic habits. For the execution of this study, the bone accidents perceptible in the specimens were identified by superficial palpation, which were then radiographed. The thoracic limb bones were prepared by boiling and drying in the sun. Finally, from the radiographic images and the prepared bones, a detailed description of the anatomy of the bone components of the thoracic limb of Didelphis albiventris was made, joining the previously obtained data of surface anatomy. These data were compared with data from the literature, discussing the functional significance of the osteological findings of the thoracic limb of Didelphis albiventris.

ABSTRACT

In view of the scarcity of data about the topography and syntopy of abdominopelvic viscera of the giant anteater (Myrmecophage tridactyla - Linnaeus, 1758), the present study aimed to elucidate these characteristics and to compare them with the other animal species, especially the domestic ones. Three specimens, two males and one female, were donated by the Environmental Military Police of Franca to the Anatomy Veterinary Laboratory of the University of Franca, after death by road killings. The animals were fixed and maintained in aqueous 10% formaldehyde solution, followed by conventional dissection of the abdominopelvic cavities for subsequent direct inspection and topographic description of the viscera, aiming at comparative analyzes with other species, whose positioning and particularities are already established in the literature. It was observed that most of the viscera of these cavities have similar location and syntopy to domestic animals, except for the kidneys and testicles. In view of the established methodology and the results obtained, it is accepted that more specimens of anteater, both genera, should be evaluated and registered scientifically to confirm the data of the current research and anatomical preconization of the abdominopelvic cavity, inasmuch anatomical individual variation are possible between animals of the same species.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to describe anatomical features of the forelimb skeleton of Mazama gouazoubira in order to establish morphofunctional activity. Forelimbs of four young adult specimens were used to this end. The bones were prepared by boiling and cleared in a solution of hydrogen peroxide for comparative descriptions, osteometrics measurements and digital radiographs. Compared to domestic ruminants, the scapula proved to be wide and flat, with a small acromion, reduced coracoid process and lacking of spine tuberosity. The humerus had an elongated shaft with a rounded cross-section and discrete non-articular projections. The ulna accompanied the radio to the distal epiphysis and formed a long and narrow, proximally placed interosseous space without a vascular groove. The skeleton of the hand presented the rudimentary metacarpals II and V and the well-developed III and IV fused metacarpals, which is a typical telemetacarpal arrangement of close phylogenetically deer species from the New World. There were four fingers, each one with three phalanges; two main (III and IV) touching the ground and two rudimentary (II and V). Radiographs allowed visualizing patterns of normal trabecular tensions and osteometrics enabled to establish ratios for comparative purposes. Adaptations of skeletal forelimb to favor cursorial saltatory locomotion were typically identified.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Fish as a food product is a source of complete, easily digested proteins, fish oil, vitamins, minerals which provide normal operation of all basic systems in the organism. Studying the general and specific characteristics of postnatal growth of fish skeletal muscles allow us to formulate evidence-based approach to the production of good quality fish. Methods: Prospective study of more than 300 species under analogue principles: : juveniles aged from 20 till 500 days, species aged 860 days at two- and three years farming technology. Complex methodological approach including morphometrics, anatomic dissection, histological set up methods with electronic scanning microscopy (Quanta 200 3D) was used. Statistical data processing was performed. Results: Technological conditions and feeding behaviour guarantee the intensity of fingerlings growth. According to our records carp increases body weight up to from 50 (at 3 year technology) to 411 times (at 2 year technology) between 15 and 135 days; phytoplankton silver carp up to 190-301 times, phytovorous grass carp up to 128-302 times respectively. Discussion: Vigorous hyperplastic growth of carps at early stages of postnatal ontogenesis influences on further growth of mature animals. ABSTRACT

Cerdocyon thous (crab-eating fox) is the most common wild canid in South American territory. The aim of this paper was to describe macroscopic, microscopic and comparative morphology of the larynx of this species. Analyses of larynges of sixteen specimens (four males and twelve females) revealed the topography, conformation, morphometrics, intrinsic muscles and histological characteristics. The larynx was positioned ventral to the axis and comprised one cricoid and one thyroid cartilage (hyaline), one epiglottis (elastic) and a pair of arytenoids (mixed). A pair of sesamoid cartilages was identified between the corniculate processes and the cricoid lamina. Morphometry revealed that thyroid cartilage was the largest. There were no conclusive signs of sexual dimorphism in the larynx of this species. Squamous stratified epithelium predominated and underwent transition to ciliated pseudo-stratified at the level of caudal thyroid and rostral cricoid portions. By comparison, larynx of C. thous showed similarity with the domestic dog, although the shape of cartilages has shown some variation.

This study aimed to determine point of opening of excretory parotid duct in the wild canids Cerdocyon thous and Lycalopex gymnocercus and compare the findings with those available for other carnivores. We analyzed 28 cadavers (56 hemiarcads) collected dead from highways, which included five males and nine females of C. thous and nine males and five females of L. gymnocercus. Thereafter, the parotid papilla was inspected and an imaginary vertical line was projected to determine its topography in relation to the premolars (P) and molars (M). Two cadavers of each species were macrodissected to determine the position of the salivary parotid gland and its duct. The parotid gland was located ventrally to the ear cartilage and its duct crossed on lateral surface of the masseter muscle, opening in the buccal region of the oral vestibule. When considered hemiarcades, the opening of the duct in C. thous predominated at the level between P4 and M1 (53.6% of cases), followed by opening opposite to the M1 (46.4%). Males of C. thous presented the duct opening in a significantly (p-value = 0.0006) caudally level when compared to females. In L. gymnocercus half of hemiarcades showed the opening at the level between P4 and M1 and the other half opposed to M1, with no significant difference between genders. It could be concluded that these two species have parotid papilla in a caudal position in relation to the reports concerning domestic dogs.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to describe the topography of the lumbar intumescence and medullary conus in the spinal cord of the pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus), in order to establish anatomical basis for epidural anesthesia procedures in this species, as well as to give data for neuroanatomical comparative studies in animals. For this purpose, five specimens, four males and one female, collected dead from road kills at the southwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were embalmed and conserved in formaldehyde solution. Macrodissections and digital radiographs revealed that lumbar intumescence has an average length of 31.40 ± 5,09 mm, lies over L4 and L5 vertebrae and appears relatively shorter in comparison to other carnivore species. The medullary conus has an elongated dimension which seemed to be typical for smaller canids and an average length of 68.28 ± 8,36 mm. Its skeletopy exhibited a basis over L5 and an apices over S3 vertebrae in four specimens; in one individual the basis was over L6 and the apices over Cd1. The findings suggest that needle puncture for epidural anesthesia in Lycalopex gymnocercus is safer if done at the sacrocaudal space. Keywords: animal anatomy, epidural anesthesia, pampas fox, wild carnivores.

ABSTRACT

The stomach of the farmed African catfish (Clarias gariepinus, Siluriformes: clariidae) was investigated in this study to establish its basic anatomy, as there is scanty information available on the literature. It produced to baseline data for further investigative research, help fish clinicians in pathology and aid nutritionists in feed management. After cropping from a commercial aquaculture, apparently healthy fish were immobilized and euthanized by using chloroform. The samples were dissected and slices of cardiac, fundic and pyloric stomach processed through routine histological procedures. Grossly, the stomach was J-shape. Cranial to the stomach was the oesophagus but no sphincter was seen separating them. Caudally, a pyloric sphincter separated the stomach from the proximal intestine. The stomach contained three regions cardiac, fundic and pyloric. The entire stomach surface was lined by a simple columnar epithelium containing mucin at the apical cytoplasm. Only the cardiac and fundic regions contained gastric glands in the lamina propria, but the glands were more developed in the fundic region. The tunica muscularis contained smooth muscle cells in an inner circular and outer longitudinal orientation. Mucin histochemistry revealed the presence of only neutral mucin in the stomach. The results obtained in this study suggest that the absence of gastric glands in the pylorus may be an adaptation of this species to reduce the quantity of acid entering the proximal intestine; hence it might help the alkaline medium to maximize pancreatic enzyme actions in the proximal intestine. The presence of only neutral mucin in the stomach will act as a buffer to neutralize the high acidic stomach content. Neutral mucins are also associated with transport of macromolecules.

ABSTRACT

Todos apresentaram a artéria marginalis intestini tenuispercorrendo a margem mesentérica do intestino delgado.

The arrangement formed by the celiac artery in 30 ostrich chicks, 15 males and 15 females were studied. The average length of the celiac artery was 0.33±0.08 cm for male and 0.32±0.14cm in females, even though there was no difference of this measurement between genders. There was also no correlation between rostrossacral length and the length of the celiac artery in both sexes. Its origin was at the level of seventh intercostal space in most cases, despite a varied skeletopy which was independent of gender. Its territory of irrigation included esophagus, proventriculus, gizzard, liver, spleen, pancreas, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and bothcecum. The celiac artery leaves the aorta and originates pro-ventricular dorsal artery and splenic artery and thus splits into two other branches: left and right. In most ostriches, left branch offered branches to the esophagus, proventriculus and gizzard in severaldifferent patterns. The right branch irrigated first the pancreas and formed a right hepatic artery to the liver, a right gastric artery to the gizzard and finished as pancreatic duodenalis artery to supply the pancreas and the ascendens and descendens portions from duodenum. Finally, this artery has formed numerous ileocecal branches to ileum and to right and left cecum. Duodenojejunal and jejunal arteries were present only in 10% and 3.33% of the ostriches, respectively. All animals showed intestini tenuis marginalisartery transiting the mesenteric border of the small intestine. Anastomoses of the intestinal celiac branches with those from cranial mesenteric artery were found in 20% of cases.

ABSTRACT

Twenty-eight fowls (Gallus gallus domesticus) of the Red Bro Cou Nu lineage were studied. They were about 35 days old and had their arteries filled with Neoprene Latex 450", aqueous solution at 50%, stained with specific pigment (Globo S/A, Tintas e Pigmentos), and then fixed in aqueous solution of formaldehyde at 10%. The present study aimed to quantify the thymic lobes and identify the main arteries responsible for the blood supply of these lobes and their frequencies. The number of thymic lobes on the right antimere varied from two to 11, with a greater frequency of 8 lobes; and the left antimere showed a variation from one to eight, with a greater frequency of five lobes. The arteries destined to the thymus were composed by direct and indirect branches of the following arteries: left and right common vagus nerve, left and right cranial thyroid, left and right caudal thyroid, left and right ascending esophageal, right ingluvial, left and right cutaneous, and right common carotid. The right thymic lobes, regardless their origin, received from eight to 27 vascular branches, and the left thymic lobes, from eight to 24 branches.

ABSTRACT

The morphology, organization and intracytoplasmic components of the liver of the spectacled cayman (Caiman crocodilus crocodilus) are aspects that have been partially studied so far. A descriptive study of the morphological and histochemical characteristics of the liver of this subspecies was performed. This investigation would enable researchers to understand the liver functions in these animals, thus allowing future research using this organ as an experimental model. Eight liver samples were fixed in 10% v/v formalin and processed by conventional histology using routine hematoxylin and eosin staining. Additionaly, special stains, such as the Trichrome of Gallegos method and the red oil “O” and Wilder, were also used. The findings revealed the presence of a bilobed liver located in the midline of the caudal coelomic cavity, surrounded by a thin capsule of connective tissue; the parenchyma showed the layout of the classic hepatic lobule, the hepatocytes were arranged in tortuous cords and an acinar pattern. The presence of pigment-laden cells compatible with melanophores scattered in liver tissue was evidenced. Intracytoplasmic lipid droplets of various sizes occupying almost the entire cytoplasm of the hepatocytes were observed.

ABSTRACT

The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive method of diagnostic imaging to evaluate soft tissues, specially the brain, however it is expensive. The method is based on the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon that occurs when atomic nucleus with magnetic proprieties in the body are submitted to a strong magnetic field, and excited with radio frequency generating a radio frequency signal captured by a receptive antenna. The signal is processed by Fourier Transform for the image formation. This study had the objective to obtain 10 complete exams of heads in cadavers of normal dogs to MRI and to make an Atlas of head structures. The images were obtained with a magnetic resonance unit Gyroscan S15/HP Philips using a magnetic field of 1,5Tesla. The cadavers were positioned with the head into a human head coil and submitted to sagittal slices used to plan transverse and dorsal slices in T1, T2 and DP spin-echo sequences. In T1 we adjusted TR=400ms and TE=30ms, in T2 TR=2000ms and TE=80ms and in DP TR=2000ms and TE=30ms. The slice thickness was 4mm, the number of averages 2, the matrix 256x256, the factor 1,0 and the field of view 14cm. The duration of the complete exam of the head was 74,5minutes. The images obtained with the described sequences and with the human head coil was of good quality. In T1 fat was hyperintense and fluid was hypointense. In T2 fat was less hyperintense and fluid was hyperintense. The cortical bone and the air were hypointense in all sequences used because of the low proton density. The DP sequence showed the best contrast between white and gray matter when compared with T2 and T1 sequences...

ABSTRACT

This work was developed with the aim of enriching knowledge on the vascular morphology of renal and gonadal arteries of Podocnemis unifilis, thus increasing the understanding of the clinical and surgical physiology of these animals. Five Podocnemis unifilis males were used, collected according to license no. 066/2004-Ibama/RAM. The left carotid artery and right femoral vein were cannulated, and a serum solution was introduced to remove obstructions from the vascular system. A solution of Neoprene Latex 450 dye was injected. The material was fixed in a solution of 10% formaldehyde for a period of 96 hours. Next, a square-shaped central opening was made in the caudal end of the plastron and bridge, exposing the branches of the aorta that irrigate the kidneys and gonads. It was observed that the renal arteries were originated from the ventral face of the dorsal aorta artery, in a number of two pairs per kidney and, in a single case, they originated one right and two left renal arteries. The gonadal artery was originated from the renal artery, and only one pair penetrated the dorsal face of each gonad.
